By evil means : a phoebe siegal mystery

==Biography == Piper Halliwell was born August 8, 1973 Died May 17 2001, the second child of Patricia Halliwell and Victor Bennett . In the Season One episode "That 70's Episode", it is revealed that, on March 24, 1975, she was visited by a future version of herself. It was also on that day that Patty made a pact with the warlock Nicholas to make him a ring that made him immune to her daughters' powers. After Piper's younger sister, Phoebe , was born in November 1975, Penny bound their powers to keep Nicholas from collecting them and ultimately killing them.

Growing up, Piper is the middle sister—meek, shy and very much the arbitrator between her sisters, Phoebe and Prue as originally witnessed in the first episode of the series “Something Wicca This Way Comes”.

It was revealed in the season three episode, Coyote Piper , that Piper wore glasses and braces in high school and was a shy and awkward student often feeling overshadowed by her sisters and classmates such as Joanne Hertz and Missy Campbell. She ran for freshman class secretary but was too nervous to finish her speech; needing Prue to finish it for her. One of her friends was Justin Harper, who later dates Prue in season three, having had a crush on her throughout high school. Piper graduated Baker High School in 1990.

Flashbacks from the Season Three episode “ PreWitched ” reveal that Piper was trained as an accountant and a chef at college. She worked as a bank teller after her college graduation, but was persuaded by Grams to resign. Right after Grams died in 1998 from a heart attack while walking down the stairs, Piper worked as a private caterer and as a chef at a trendy bar/restaurant in downtown San Francisco called "Quake

After their Grams dies Piper and her older sister Prue move back into their childhood home — a Victorian manor which has been in their family for generations and willed to the sisters. The pilot picks up six months later when their youngest sister Phoebe moves home and discovers The Book of Shadows in their attic, from an old spirit board. The three sisters make the discovery of an ancient prophecy which spoke of generations of Halliwell's culminating in the arrival of three sisters becoming the most powerful witches known to walk the earth -- The Charmed Ones.

As a new witch, Piper develops the power of molecular immobilization; the ability to slow down the molecules of an object or person to the point of motionless activity. At first her power was triggered by fear and only works on people/objects within close range in the same room as her. She also has no control over the length of time the effects last. She used her power for the first time during a practical interview for Quake -- Chef Moore entered before she had completed her recipe, and she froze him accidentally, to complete her dish.

This is the first of three recorded adventures for perhaps the only fictional PI working out of Billings, Montana, a former FBI agent named Phoebe Siegel. The case seems simple enough, that of a woman who is afraid that there is something wrong at Whispering Pines, the psychiatric clinic on the outskirts of town where her daughter had recently sought help.

Phoebe is about to turn her down, since (for many reasons) she always takes the month of March off. One of the reasons is that March is the month that her brother Ben, a cop in the local police force, committed suicide. She changes her mind, though, when the mother tells her there may have been an involvement between the girl and her brother Ben, even to the extent of a police complaint just before he died.

Thus begins a long (over 350 pages) investigation into all kinds of secrets in her home town that Phoebe had never had an inkling of, many of them involving her family and friends, and she has many in both categories. The book is slow to start. It is not until page 130 or so, when Phoebe goes sneaks into Whispering Pines and convinces herself at last that Dr. Stroud is indeed up to no good, that the tale really starts to get into high gear.

In some ways, this book reminded me of several of Marcia Muller’s Sharon McCone stories, in which the friends and family seem to be a secondary but essential sidebar to the mystery. But in Phoebe Siegel’s case, the role they both take on simply grows and grows, insidiously so. The ending is as harrowing as any that I’ve read in a PI novel in quite a long time.

According to the Thrilling Detective website , By Evil Means was nominated for the Hammett Prize, and both that novel and The Killing of Monday Brown were nominated for a Shamus.

Sandra and I had the same agent when we started out, so I met her a few times and liked her and her books. She had some success early and then stopped writing. I’ve often wondered why and what happened to her.
